Alienation From God
Alienation from God refers to the state of being separated or estranged from God. It is a condition that all people experience as a result of sin. This alienation is a consequence of our rebellion against God's perfect and righteous standards. Because God is holy and sinless, any sin or wrongdoing creates a separation between Him and us.
In the beginning, humanity enjoyed a close and intimate relationship with God. However, when our first parents,
Adam and Eve, chose to disobey God in the Garden of Eden, sin entered the world, corrupting the nature of humanity. As a result, we are born into a fallen and sinful state, cut off from God's presence.
This alienation affects various aspects of our lives.
- Spiritually, it means that our sin separates us from God's holiness and glory.
- Relationally, it disrupts our communion with God as well as our relationships with others. - Emotionally, it leads to a sense of emptiness and longing for something greater, as we were created to have fellowship with our Creator.
It is crucial to understand that this alienation from God is a reality for every person, regardless of their position, moral behavior, or religious affiliation. It is a condition that affects all of humanity.
The good news is that God, in His infinite love and mercy, has provided a way for us to be reconciled to Him.
Through the person and work of Jesus Christ, God has made provision for our redemption.
Jesus, being fully God and fully human, lived a sinless life and willingly gave Himself as a sacrifice for our sins on the cross. By believing in Him and accepting His sacrifice, we are reconciled to God and restored to a right relationship with Him.
Through faith in Christ, the alienation that separates us from God is overcome, and we are brought into intimate fellowship with Him, experiencing His love, grace, and eternal life.
The Total Depravity of Humanity:
Doctrine of Original Sin:
All human beings are born in a state of sin and alienation from God due to the disobedience of Adam and Eve. This fallen state results in a complete inability to reconcile with God on one's own merit.
Radical Corruption:
Every aspect of human existence is tainted by sin, rendering individuals incapable of seeking God or achieving reconciliation with Him.
The Sovereignty of God and Predestination:
Divine Sovereignty:
God alone possesses the power to initiate and accomplish the liberation from alienation.
Predestination:
Within the framework of God's sovereignty, God, before the foundation of the world, elected certain individuals for salvation.
Faith, then, is a gift from God, enabling individuals to respond to His call and experience liberation from alienation.
Union with Christ:
Believers are united to Christ in a mystical, spiritual sense. This union, accomplished by the work of the Holy Spirit, enables believers to participate in Christ's redemption, thus overcoming the alienation from God.
Justification by Faith Alone:
Faith is the means through which individuals receive God's gift of salvation. By faith, believers are justified before God, declared righteous, and liberated from the penalty and power of sin.
Faith, understood as a gift from God, enables individuals to enter into union with Christ and experience justification, thereby overcoming the alienation and finding their ultimate liberation in God's grace.
